North Carolina counties revalue all real estate every 4-8 years. Mecklenburg County is revaluing real estate for the first time in 8 years, with the last revaluation in 2003. That period saw significant increases in the value of real estate until 2008 when the financial crisis of that year hit Charlotte, North Carolina's financial center, with a vengeance. According to a recent Charlotte Observer article, the value of commercial property in the county increased 31% over the past eight years.
Appeals must be taken before the local Board of Equalization and Review adjourns. Although that date has not yet been set, Mecklenburg County takes the position that it can adjourn its Board except for pending appeals. Taxpayers with properties in Mecklenburg County are receiving notices now and should promptly appeal if they think their property is over assessed.
Other NC counties which are revaluing this year are: Ashe, Brunswick, Carteret, Catawba, Haywood, Henderson,, Hertford, Iredell, Johnston, Lincoln, McDowell, Northampton, Pender, Rockingham, Rowan, Rutherford, Sampson, Scotland and Wayne.
